Abstract: The article, originally published by the author in 1963, provides a general introduction to Somali poetry. Originating in Somali pastoral environment, poetry is the finest artistic expression in Somali society: it has a number of metric restrictions (among all, allitteration and the wide use of figures of speech) and it is almost always topical and related to some true life situation; its purpose and the moment of its composition are fundamental aspects of the poem itself. The role of the poet is multifaceted: artist, spokesman and a politician. Poetry in Somali oral culture with its oral means of knowledge trasmission fulfills historic and memory functions and represents an important moral values vehicle.
Maqaalkan, oo la daabacay 1963, wuxuu si guud uga hadlayaa maansada ka soo jeedda degaannada raacatada Soomaaliyeed. Maansada oo u ah Soomaalida fanka hadalka midkiisa ugu heer sarreeya waxay leedahay: miisaan, qaafiyad iyo hadal maldaheed badan. Mowduuca maansadu wuxuu mar waliba la xiriira dhacdooyinka iyo xaaladda markas jirta. Dowrka gabyaagu dhowr weji ayuu leeyahay: fannaan, afhayeen iyo siyaasi. Maansadu waxay xambaarsan tahay qayb ka mid ah taariikhda iyo dhaqanka Soomaaliyeed.
