Ignorance is the enemy of love

Abstract

This novel represents the first major literary publication in the Somali language, which had no official orthography until 1972. It is based on a real incident of the last century, it tells the story of a young woman who sends a love letter to a man who cannot read, with sad consequences. It is set at the beginning of the twentieth century and is the story of Cawrala and Calimaax. Fate brings them together as they travel on the same ship from Aden. However, the ship runs into a storm but Calimaax is able to rescue Cawrala.

Questo romanzo rappresenta la prima importante pubblicazione letteraria in lingua somala, che non aveva ortografia ufficiale fino al 1972. Si basa su una storia vera avvenuta del secolo scorso e narra la vicenda di una giovane donna che invia una lettera d'amore ad un uomo che non sa leggere, con conseguenze negative. La narrazione è ambientata all'inizio del XX secolo ed è la storia di Cawrala e Calimaax. Il destino li riunisce mentre viaggiano sulla stessa nave da Aden; la nave si imbatte però in una tempesta, ma Calimaax riesce a salvare Cawrala.
