Abstract: Over the past twenty years, the generation of digital data has been increasing due to the widespread use of computers for capturing, analysing, and transmitting different kinds of information. The benefits deriving from the capability of being able to efficiently process large amount of data are countless, ranging from increasing revenues of business companies to accumulating knowledge for research purposes. The main purpose of this thesis is to present original and efficient solutions for the secure processing and transmission of data. More generally, in this manuscript my aim is to discuss relevant topics for this area, including data compression, frequent pattern discovery and retrieving “human-understandable” information from datasets, and secure “light-weighted” protocols for transmitting data ensuring integrity and confidentiality of the message. For each one of these topics, a thorough discussion of the relevant state of the art is provided and at least an original solution is presented and evaluated through both theoretical and experimental analysis.
