God, Anti-Colonialism and Drums: Sheikh Uways and the Uwaysiyya

Abstract

This article describes the development of the most effective pan-Islamic movement in East Africa, the Uwaysiyya, led by Sheikh Uways. In particular, in order to understand its evolution, this paper goes through the history of Islam in Somalia and the 19th century changes that occurred in the southern portions of the country.

L'articolo descrive lo sviluppo del movimento panislamico più efficace dell'Africa orientale, il Uwaysiyya, guidato da Sheikh Uways. In particolare, per comprendere l'evoluzione di questo movimento, il documento analizza attentamente la storia dell'Islam in Somalia e i cambiamenti del XIX sec. avvenuti nelle aree meridionali del paese.
