The article, originally published by the author in 1978, provides a general description of Somali drama. Flourished during 1940s in urban environment, Somali theatre reached rapidly public masses interest and developed its own characteristic form. With the aim of a realistic representation of life and dealing mainly with modern life situations, Somali drama can advocade social reforms, censure abuses through sature and promote political views. It deeply and emotionally involves the audience, involvement made possible because of the extensive use of traditional culture and folklore of the nation: written in prose, the most important passages have a poetic form, such as poetic debates and riddles; plays include also allusive quotes of traditional folktales. The article is enriched by excerpts from well-known Somali plays.it_IT
