Position, Function and Interpretation of Topics in Somali

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the intonational properties of Topics in Somali, peruse the interpretation of these constituents and consider the interplay between different levels of analysis in order the check the validity of the aforesaid connection in a polysynthetic language in which full DPs are obligatory realized as Topics.

Hadafka maqaalkani wuxuu yahay in uu falanqeeyo waxyaabaha u gaarka ah codkaca ku dhaca mowduuca (topic) weerta Soomaaliyeed. Mowduucu waa waxa laga hadlayo oo noqon karo magac ama weer qabyo. Haddaba waxaa halkaan lagu falanqaynayaa mawduuca waxa uu ka kooban yahay, rutiisa iyo waxa uu yahay mowduuc af isrorroggisi badan "polysynthetic".

Lo scopo di questo lavoro è quello di esaminare le proprietà intonazionali del Topic in somalo, capire l'interpretazione di questi costituenti e prendere in considerazione l'interazione tra diversi livelli di analisi al fine di verificare la validità del collegamento per cui in una lingua polisintetica i DP (Determiner Phrase) sono realizzati obbligatoriamente come Topic.
