Abstract

Gabyaagu wuxuu maansadan kaga hadlayaa gabar soomaaliyeed oo ku kortay Mombasa, afkeeda iyo dhaqankeedana si fiican loo barin, oo doorbidday in ay ku hadasho afafka dadka gibilka cad, kaddibna ay yare dhibsatay midabka madow ee Afrikaanka, ayaa waxay in muddo ah isku caddeysay waxyaabaha lasku dhaasho. Aabbaheed oo muddo ka maqnaa reerka ayaa, markuu arkay gabadhiisi oo midab kale leh, aad uga carooday, si xunna u dilay gabadhiina. Gabyaaga oo aad ula yaabay arrintaas ayaa wuxuu isweydiinayaa cidda dembiga leh. Iyadu jirkeeda ayay caddeysay, laakiin yaa maskaxdeeda caddeeyay? Teebaa daran in jirka la caddeeyo iyo in la tumo?

In questa poesia il poeta parla di una giovane ragazza somala cresciuta a Mombasa, a cui non è stata bene insegnata la propria lingua e cultura. Per questo lei apprezza e preferisce parlare le lingue dei bianchi. Detestando il colore della pelle degli africani, cerca di rendersi la pelle più chiara con sostanze chimiche speciali. Suo padre, tornando a casa dopo essere mancato a lungo, si arrabbia molto nel vedere la pelle della propria figlia di un altro colore e cosi la picchia. Il poeta, molto stupito da questo atto, si domanda di chi sia la colpa: la ragazza ha reso bianca la sua pelle, ma chi ha reso bianco la sua mentalità? Qual è l’azione peggiore? Schiarirsi la pelle o venire picchiata per questo?

In this poem, the poet talks about a young Somali girl, grown up in Mombasa, to whom nobody has well taught her own language and culture. This is why she likes and prefers to speak the languages of white people. As she hates the color of the African skin, she tries to make her skin paler using particular chemical substances. Her father, coming back home after being away for a long time, gets really angry when he sees her daughter's skin of another color and so he beats her. The poet, surprised by this action, wonders about who the guilty is: the girl made her skin white, but who made white her mentality? Which is the worst action? Making the skin white or being beaten for this?
