Women and Words

Abstract

Poetry is the Somali's most valuable artistic expression, and women are generally excluded from it. However, Somali women compose some types of poetry. This article describes the different genres of poems and songs composed by women in the nomadic Somal society, their features and their social value. The picture depicted by Somali poets about women is also analyzed, so as the role women play in nomadic household.

La poesia è l'espressione artistica più preziosa della cultura somala e le donne ne sono generalmente escluse. Ciò nonostante, le donne somale compongono alcuni tipi di poesie. Questo articolo descrive i differenti generi di poesia e di canzoni composte dalle donne nella società nomade somala, le loro caratteristiche e il loro valore sociale. Vengono poi analizzati la figura della donna nella letteratura maschile e il ruolo che la donna ricopre nella famiglia nomade.
