Factors of Intermediacy in Nineteenth-Century Africa: The Case of the Issa of the Horn

Abstract

In the mid-19th century, the Issa came to occupy a structural niche in the chain of communication that linked the region of the Horn to overseas market. The article aims to explore how certain elements of Issa social life and structure were caught up in the structure of intermediacy and how they varied through time.
