Abstract: A study of the significance of wild plants for the culture and economy of the people inhabiting the Horn of Africa is presented, based on research carried out in 1986, 1987 and 1991 in Somalia. The Somali ecosystem, human ecology and some aspects of Somali ethnobotany are described. A large number of conventional and unconventional useful plants of the arid and semi-arid study area are described in the given cultural and socio-economic context and some ideas about the potential utilization of these plants are given.
